In 2008, director Zang Ningbei and playwrights Zhang Jun and Xu Nan visited the southwestern part of China as the guests of an NGO, and filmed what they saw, interviewed many people and took lots of photographs. Their resulting production, River River River, skillfully combines a video documentary and a live theatre show, dealing with the important issues of water pollution and environmental protection in China.
The production team includes members from a wide variety of backgrounds. Director Zang Ningbei is the Managing Director of Mecooon, an independent arts organisation in Shanghai (he also teaches at the Shanghai Theatre Academy); Xu Nan, one of the playwrights, is a senior reporter from Nanfang Weekend, and choreographer Li Zhen is a member of the award-winning physical theatre group Zuheniao.
